World Wide Technology Raceway, big league racing across the river
1997
Madison, Illinois
The 1.25 mile oval at Madison opened in May 1997 and ran its first major race the day before that year's Indianapolis 500. Dover Motorsports bought the track, then closed it in 2010, and it sat dark until a St. Louis developer and former Indy Lights driver named Curtis Francois reopened it in 2011. It now holds both an IndyCar race and a NASCAR Cup race, with the downtown St. Louis skyline in view across the water.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
