Roosevelt Raceway and the mobile starting gate

The oval was cut in 1936 for a revival of the Vanderbilt Cup auto race, then rebuilt as a half mile harness track that opened in September 1940 and ran nightly for forty-eight years. It was the first track anywhere to start its fields behind Steve Phillips's mobile gate, a car with folding wings that is now standard in the sport worldwide. It held the Messenger Stakes, one leg of pacing's Triple Crown, until it closed in July 1988 and the lot went to a flea market.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
