Yellow Hook renames itself Bay Ridge

The village was called Yellow Hook, after the colour of the soil, until December 1853, when residents changed it to Bay Ridge to shed any association with yellow fever. It was farmland and then a summer resort until the Fourth Avenue subway arrived in 1916 and filled it with apartment houses. Norwegian and Danish sailors settled here and in neighbouring Sunset Park in enough numbers that Eighth Avenue was nicknamed Lapskaus Boulevard, after the beef stew.
