A Greek buyer sent for divers from Kalymnos and the Dodecanese, and five hundred came with rubber suits and copper helmets to work beds the local hook boats could not reach. Within twenty years this was the largest sponge port in the world. The town still has the highest proportion of Greek Americans anywhere, and on Epiphany the archbishop throws a cross into the bayou for teenage boys to dive after.
