Frank Lloyd Wright roofed the main workroom on slender concrete columns that flare out into wide discs at the top, and when the state building inspectors said they would not stand up he had one built in the yard and loaded it with sixty tons of scrap until they stopped arguing. There are no windows: light comes through miles of Pyrex tubing laid between the columns. He added a research tower in 1950 with floors cantilevered off a central core like a stack of trays, which was beautiful and had one staircase and no sprinklers, and was closed in 1982 for exactly that reason.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
