William Penn comes ashore at Upland and renames it Chester
1682
Chester, Pennsylvania
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Penn stepped off the ship Welcome here at the end of October 1682, at the only existing town in the province he had just been granted. The Swedes and the Dutch had called it Upland. Penn renamed it Chester, and it served as his colony's first seat of government before Philadelphia was laid out. A monument designed by John Struthers was set on the spot for the two hundredth anniversary in 1882.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
