John Anderson Penn came from Illinois in 1854 with money made in the California gold fields and settled the cedar hills southwest of Dallas. His son John Wesley Penn built the place up to 1,100 acres of wheat, corn, oats and cattle, and died of a rattlesnake bite in 1888. His widow Lucinda and their nine children kept farming, and the family held the land until 1970. Texas bought it in 1982, and the barns, sheds and old equipment now stand inside Cedar Hill State Park.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
