Several hundred auto body shops and scrapyards worked these blocks for most of a century with no sewers, no street lights and almost no paved road, so the potholes filled and stayed filled. The city tried to condemn the district for decades and finally began clearing it in 2016. A soccer stadium is now going up on the ground the shops worked.
