Wilkinsburg station, built when the railroad was lifted over the town

The borough spent years arguing with the Pennsylvania Railroad about the trains running at street level through the middle of town. The railroad gave in and from 1914 raised the whole line onto an embankment between Swissvale and Homewood, putting bridges over three main streets. Walter H. Cookson designed the Beaux-Arts station that came with it, finished in 1916 with a tiled waiting room and heavy wooden benches. The last passenger used it in 1975 and it went on the National Register ten years later.
