The Harsimus Stem Embankment, a stone railroad wall through downtown

The Pennsylvania Railroad lifted its freight tracks out of the downtown streets by building six blocks of solid stone embankment, twenty seven feet high, finished in the first years of the twentieth century. Freight stopped running over it in the 1990s and Conrail sold it privately in 2005, which set off a litigation fight over whether the line had ever been lawfully abandoned. Trees have grown on top of it in the meantime.
