White Settlement, Texas

The name goes back to the 1840s, when this was the lone settlement of white colonists among several Native villages west of Fort Worth. General Edward Tarrant, who gave the county its name, had led Texas militia against those villages on Village Creek in 1841, part of a campaign President Mirabeau Lamar called a war of extermination. In October 2005 city leaders proposed changing the name to West Settlement, saying it was putting off businesses. Voters rejected the change 2,388 to 219.
