John B. Denton was an orphan turned circuit riding Methodist preacher, lawyer and militia captain who died on 24 May 1841 leading a party against Caddoan villages at Village Creek, about forty miles south of here. Texas created the county in 1846 and named it after him, and the town that became the county seat took the name too. The city was incorporated in 1866, and the railroad reached it in 1881.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
