Cassius Marcellus Clay, a slaveholder's son who freed his own inherited slaves and published an abolitionist paper in Lexington, fortified his newspaper office with two cannon and a keg of powder. A mob shipped the press to Cincinnati anyway. He survived several attempts on his life, helped found the Republican party, and Muhammad Ali's family name descends from his.
