Christiana, where a rescue became treason

A Maryland slaveholder came with federal marshals for four men who had escaped, and a free Black farmer named William Parker met him with a house full of armed neighbours. The slaveholder was killed. The government charged thirty-eight people with treason, the largest such indictment in American history, and a jury acquitted the first defendant in fifteen minutes, effectively killing enforcement of the Fugitive Slave Act in the North.
