Tristán de Luna landed here in 1559 with eleven ships and 1,500 people to plant the first European settlement in what is now the United States, six years before St. Augustine. A hurricane sank most of the fleet five weeks in, with the food still aboard, and the colony starved out by 1561. The site was lost for four and a half centuries until 2015, when it turned up under an ordinary Pensacola neighborhood. The wrecks are still in the bay off Emanuel Point.
