John White left 115 settlers, including his granddaughter Virginia Dare, and sailed for supplies. War with Spain kept him away three years. He came back to an empty, dismantled settlement with CROATOAN carved on a post and no distress cross agreed as a signal, which suggests an orderly move to Hatteras rather than a massacre. He could not get a boat there, and left.
