Westbury Music Fair, a tent pitched in an old lime pit
1956
Jericho, New York
Shelly Gross and Lee Guber put up a striped canvas tent on an abandoned lime pit and opened on 18 June 1956 with The King and I, 1,850 seats in the round and no wall between the audience and the stage. The bet was that suburban Long Island would pay for touring musicals and headliners rather than drive into Manhattan for them, and it paid. The tent came down in 1966 for an enclosed year-round theatre seating 2,870, which is still running.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
