The West Pullman Land Association platted this district in the 1880s to sell factory sites and house lots to workers who wanted out from under George Pullman's rules. Plano Manufacturing moved its reaper works here in 1893 and was one of five firms folded together into International Harvester in 1902. Whitman and Barnes and Chicago Malleable Castings built alongside it, served by a switching line the district ran itself as the Chicago, West Pullman and Southern. The Panic of 1893 and the Pullman strike a year later bankrupted the land association before the houses caught up with the plants.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
