Blue Island, where the Pullman strike met a federal injunction

On 2 July 1894 a United States marshal stood in the door of a mail car at the Rock Island yards here and read out a court order telling the American Railway Union to stop interfering with the mails. The crowd of roughly two thousand strikers shouted him down and tipped a boxcar onto the track. Federal infantry arrived on the Fourth of July and camped by the depot, and the injunction, not the troops, is what finally broke the strike nationwide.
