West Lake Forest grows around the biggest mall in Louisiana and outlives it
1974
New Orleans, Louisiana
This subdivision of New Orleans East went up through the late 1960s and 1970s on drained marsh, and on 18 October 1974 Lake Forest Plaza opened in the middle of it with about 1.2 million square feet of retail, the largest shopping centre in the state. The oil bust of the late 1980s took the neighbourhood's tenants and then its shoppers. The mall was already closed when Katrina flooded it in 2005, and the ruins came down in 2007.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
