John Vassall built the Brattle Street mansion in 1759 on the proceeds of a Jamaican plantation, then fled as a loyalist when the war reached Cambridge. George Washington took the empty house and ran the siege of Boston from it. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow lived there for close to fifty years afterward, and the National Park Service keeps it now.
