Washington refuses a crown at Newburgh

Unpaid officers at the end of the war circulated a proposal to march on Congress, and some had earlier floated making Washington king. He walked into the meeting, argued against it, then fumbled for his spectacles and said he had grown grey and nearly blind in their service, and the room broke. It is the moment the American army settled the question of civilian control.
