Versailles keeps the name of the plantation the British used as a hospital

Pierre Denis de la Ronde bought this stretch of river road in 1783 and had an avenue of oaks planted up to his house, which he called Versailles. On 8 January 1815 the British used that house as a headquarters and a field hospital, and General Pakenham's body was carried back to it after the battle. The family sold at auction in 1832 and the buyer cut the land into lots under the same name. It never became a town, but locals still call this stretch Versailles even though the mail says Chalmette.
