Siege of Vicksburg

Grant cut off the last Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi and starved it for six weeks while civilians lived in caves dug into the bluffs. It surrendered on the Fourth of July, splitting the Confederacy in two, and Vicksburg did not celebrate Independence Day again for eighty years.
