Washington burns the bridge at Acquackanonk
1776
Gregory Avenue Bridge, Passaic, New Jersey

A wooden span built in 1766 crossed the Passaic just upstream of the present bridge, and it was the only crossing for miles. On November 21, 1776, after abandoning Fort Lee and slipping over the Hackensack, Washington marched the remains of his army over it and had it burned behind him to slow Cornwallis. A tavern beside the landing served as his headquarters. The current bridge went up in 1906 and has been fixed shut since the 1980s.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
