Thirty-seven members of the Lee family lived in this 1785 house between then and 1903, along with the enslaved and free servants who kept it running. The Union army filled it with wounded soldiers from 1863 to 1865. From 1937 until his death in 1969 it was the home of John L. Lewis, the mine workers' president who founded the CIO and shut down the coalfields during the Second World War.
