New Bridge Landing, the crossing that saved the army
1776
New Bridge Landing, River Edge, New Jersey
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Cornwallis landed five thousand men at the foot of the Palisades on November 20, 1776 and Washington had hours to get out of Fort Lee. The only way off Bergen Neck without being trapped between two rivers was the narrow bridge here, and the army crossed it and kept going west. The stone house beside the landing had belonged to the loyalist Jan Zabriskie. New Jersey seized it and gave it to Baron von Steuben in 1783 for training the Continental Army, and the state has run it as a museum since 1939.
