The Erie Canal at Syracuse
1825
Syracuse, New York
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Syracuse existed because of salt, brine springs beside Onondaga Lake supplied most of the country's salt for decades, and the canal was routed through to carry it. The last surviving canal weighlock building in the country stands here.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
