Vinegar Hill, the Brooklyn Irishtown named for a lost rebellion

The merchant John Jackson bought this ground in 1800, put up a shipyard and housing for his workmen, and named it for the 1798 Battle of Vinegar Hill in County Wexford, a defeat, in the hope that the name would pull newly arrived Irish shipwrights to him. It worked. The district filled with Irish dockhands and Navy Yard workers and was known locally as Irishtown for a century. A few blocks of Belgian block paving and Federal houses survive between DUMBO and the Navy Yard.
