Vanderbilt founded to heal a rift

Cornelius Vanderbilt gave a million dollars to a Methodist school in a city he had never visited, on the argument that a southern university might do something to close the breach the war had left. He never saw it. In the 1920s a group of its poets and critics who called themselves the Fugitives made it a centre of American letters.
