The St. Louis Plate Glass Company opened here in 1907 with 500 workers, and a stove works, lumber yard, bottling plant and cigar factory followed. Population hit about 3,500 and 88 trains a day stopped in town. In August 1915 a record Meramec River flood destroyed or damaged nearly all of it. The factories never rebuilt and the town fell back to roughly 500 permanent residents.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
