Untermyer Gardens, a walled Indo-Persian garden above the Hudson

The lawyer Samuel Untermyer bought the Greystone estate in 1899 and spent four decades turning 150 acres of it into one of the most celebrated gardens in the country, tended by dozens of gardeners and fed by dozens of greenhouses. The centrepiece is a walled garden on an Indo-Persian plan, with an open air amphitheatre, sphinxes on paired Ionic columns and a round temple on the bluff. He let the public in one day a week, and on his death in 1940 the estate passed to the City of Yonkers.
