Garfield Park Conservatory puts four and a half acres of plants under glass

Jens Jensen pulled down three smaller West Side greenhouses and spent the money on one enormous glass room instead, built with the Prairie School firm Schmidt, Garden and Martin and opened in 1908. Some of the cycads inside are over two hundred years old. On 30 June 2011 a hailstorm broke roughly half the panes over the Fern Room, the Show House and ten propagation houses, and staff spent days lifting glass off the plants before the roofs could be replaced.
