Frederick and Mildred Matthaei gave the University of Michigan roughly 250 acres near Dixboro in 1957 and the university added a hundred more. Greenhouses, labs and trails went up through the mid 1960s, and the conservatory now holds tropical, temperate and arid rooms under one roof. The bonsai collection started in 1977 with 163 trees left by the pharmacologist Maurice Seevers and is the biggest public collection of its kind in the state.
