Twenty-six circuses wintered in Delavan
1847
Delavan, Walworth County, Wisconsin

Between 1847 and 1894 twenty-six circus companies kept their winter quarters in this small town, starting with the Mabie Brothers, then the largest circus in America, who were the first to over-winter anywhere in the Wisconsin territory. The Barnum circus itself was put together here in 1871. The town has the graves of a lot of performers, and the reason Wisconsin ended up with a circus industry at all (Ringling, Baraboo, all of it) starts on this ground.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
