A fossil bed offshore keeps shedding black shark teeth onto the beach, including megalodon, and the town calls itself the shark tooth capital of the world, people sift the surf with wire baskets on poles. The Ringling circus also moved its winter quarters here from Sarasota in 1960 and stayed thirty years.
