The congregation formed in Washington in 1915 and took its name from the A.M.E. bishop Henry McNeal Turner. In 1951 it moved into the old Adas Israel building at Sixth and I Streets and stayed half a century, by which time most of its members were living out in Prince George's County. It sold the building in 2002, with a listing that floated a nightclub as one use, and opened here in Hyattsville in 2003. Investors bought the old sanctuary instead and reopened it in 2004 as the Sixth and I Historic Synagogue.
