Congregation Beth Israel, the flooded synagogue that rebuilt in Metairie
2012
Metairie, Louisiana
The oldest Orthodox congregation in the New Orleans region traces its roots to 1857 and had worshipped on Canal Boulevard in Lakeview since 1971. The 2005 floodwater ruined that building and scattered a membership that had already fallen from more than 500 families in the 1960s to under 200. The congregation regrouped across the parish line and opened a new synagogue on West Esplanade Avenue in Metairie in 2012.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
