The Kane Street Synagogue, Brooklyn's oldest congregation
1856
Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, New York
Baith Israel was founded in 1856 and built the first synagogue on Long Island. Aaron Wise took his first American pulpit here, and a split between traditionalists and reformers in 1861 sent the reformers off to found Congregation Beth Elohim. The congregation nearly collapsed around 1900, then hired Israel Goldfarb, bought this former church building and merged with Talmud Torah Anshei Emes in 1908. It is the oldest continuously operating synagogue in Brooklyn.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
