Truman Presidential Library opens

The first library created under the 1955 Presidential Libraries Act, the law that turned Roosevelt's personal arrangement into the standard one. Truman treated it as his office for the rest of his life, driving over to answer mail and drop in on school tours, and when Thomas Hart Benton painted the lobby mural, Truman climbed the scaffold and added brushstrokes of his own. He and Bess are buried in the courtyard, and the desk sign that said the buck stops here is in the collection.
