French Protestant refugees settled New Rochelle in 1689 and named it for the port they had fled. In June 1709 the greater part of that Calvinist congregation accepted the liturgy of the Church of England, and George III granted the parish its first charter in 1762. The building at Huguenot and Division, on the old Boston Post Road, is the third the congregation has raised.
