Trinity High School and Decatur's Beacon Community
1956
Trinity Place, Decatur, Georgia
Decatur built Trinity in 1956 as the Black counterpart to its segregated white high school, one of the equalization schools the South put up to make separate but equal look credible. It stood beside Beacon Elementary in the Beacon Community, the quarter where segregation had concentrated Black homes, churches and businesses. A federal court loss in 1967 left the city the choice of integrating or losing federal money, so it closed Trinity and moved the students to Decatur High. Albert J. Martin was the school's only principal across those eleven years.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
