Travers Park and the fight for open space in Jackson Heights
2020

Jackson Heights is one of the most densely settled neighbourhoods in the country and has close to the least park space per resident in New York City. Travers Park, two acres between 77th and 78th Streets, carries most of that load, and residents pushed the city into closing the block of 78th Street beside it as a permanent plaza in 2012. In 2020 the closure grew into a car free stretch of 34th Avenue running roughly a mile and a third past the park, since named Paseo Park.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
