Duck Creek and Embree were rival railroad settlements northeast of Dallas that spent years arguing over which one deserved the post office. In 1887 Congressman Joseph Abbott ended it with a bill moving the office to a spot between the two, and the new town took the name of Attorney General Augustus H. Garland. The story locals tell is that both sides accepted the name because Garland had never been to Texas and nobody there knew a thing about him.
