Chartered while Kentucky was still part of Virginia and the frontier ran through it, this was the first college west of the Alleghenies and had medical and law schools before most eastern universities. Jefferson Davis, Stephen Austin and two vice presidents studied here, and Lexington called itself the Athens of the West on the strength of it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
