Allegheny College and the college that nearly starved
1815
Meadville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania

Founded in 1815 by a minister who begged books off John Adams and Thomas Jefferson and built one of the better early libraries in the country on the strength of it, then nearly lost the whole college to debt within twenty years. Ida Tarbell graduated from here and went on to take apart Standard Oil, having grown up in the oil country just down the road.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
