The Ypsilanti District Library starts as a shelf you paid to use
1868
Ypsilanti District Library, Ypsilanti Township, Michigan
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The library opened in 1868 as a subscription collection, meaning readers bought access to it, and only became a free public library in 1899. It now serves Ypsilanti, Ypsilanti Township and Superior Township from three branches plus a bookmobile. More than three hundred thousand visits a year pass through a system that started as a paid membership.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
