Queens Public Library, the system that never joined the others
1858
Jamaica, Queens, New York
Queens started as a subscription library in 1858 and never merged into the New York or Brooklyn systems, so the borough still runs its own, a leftover of the days when the Queens towns handled their own affairs. It grew into one of the busiest library systems on earth, lending more than 13 million items in a single year. Its central library in Jamaica holds about 1.4 million of them. Library Journal named it library of the year in 2009.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
