The Wheatland Plowing Match, a furrow contest that outlived the farms
1877
Wheatland Township, Will County, Illinois
Farmers in this township started an annual plowing competition in September 1877, and more than two hundred people came to the first one. It ran for well over a century with a ladies fair and a food tent alongside the plowing, and bad weather cancelled it only once, in 1961. When the association finally wound up it gave its thresher, plow, grain binder and tractors to the Naperville Heritage Society. Subdivisions cover most of the township now.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
