The state opened this boarding school in 1885. Ray Charles Robinson arrived in 1937 at seven years old and stayed until 1945, on the segregated Black side of the campus. He learned braille here and, more usefully for what came after, braille music notation, which meant he could write and arrange rather than only play. Piano, organ, clarinet, trumpet and saxophone all came from the same eight years.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
